This document provides disposal guidance for research-grade synthetic peptide compounds, associated solvents, contaminated consumables, and packaging materials. All disposal should be conducted in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1990, the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, and applicable local authority guidelines.
Waste Classification
Research-grade synthetic peptide compounds are classified as laboratory chemical waste. They should not be disposed of via standard municipal waste streams, sink drainage, or general laboratory bins.
Peptide Compound Waste
Unused lyophilised compound: collect in a sealed, labelled chemical waste container; dispose via a licensed waste contractor
Reconstituted peptide solutions: inactivate by adjusting pH to >12 using dilute NaOH solution, then collect in chemical waste containers for licensed disposal
Contaminated vials and consumables: collect in appropriate sharps or chemical waste containers as applicable
Solvent Waste
Bacteriostatic water waste: collect in sealed chemical waste containers; do not dispose to drain in large volumes
DMSO waste: collect separately from aqueous waste; label clearly as DMSO-containing waste; dispose via licensed contractor — do not combine with other waste streams
Acetic acid solutions: neutralise before disposal where possible; collect in chemical waste containers
Sharps & Glassware
Used needles and syringes: dispose in approved sharps containers — never in general waste
Broken vials: collect in puncture-resistant containers; treat as sharps waste
Packaging Waste
Gel packs: allow to reach ambient temperature; dispose in general waste unless contaminated
EPS packaging: contact local authority for EPS recycling options; do not contaminate with chemical waste
Outer cartons: general recycling where uncontaminated
Documentation
Maintain a waste disposal log recording: waste type, approximate quantity, disposal date, and contractor used. Retain waste transfer notes for a minimum of 3 years in accordance with the Hazardous Waste Regulations.
