Safe Handling of Lyophilised Research Peptides

This document applies to all laboratory personnel handling lyophilised synthetic peptide research compounds supplied by Essential Peptides Ltd. It is intended as a general safety reference and should be read alongside compound-specific handling notes in the relevant COA documentation.

Hazard Classification

Research-grade synthetic peptides supplied as lyophilised powders present the following primary hazard considerations:

Inhalation risk: Fine lyophilised powders may become airborne during handling. Inhalation of unknown synthetic peptides should be avoided.

Skin contact: While most research peptides present low acute dermal toxicity risk, skin contact should be minimised as a precaution.
Eye contact: Avoid powder or solution contact with eyes.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Minimum PPE for lyophilised peptide handling:

  • Nitrile gloves (latex-free) — change between compounds
  • Safety spectacles or goggles
  • Laboratory coat
  • Respiratory protection (FFP2 or equivalent) when handling fine powders in unenclosed environments

Workspace Preparation

  • Use a laminar flow cabinet or biosafety cabinet where available
  • Work on a clean, non-porous surface covered with absorbent bench paper
  • Ensure adequate ventilation in the working area
  • Keep all unnecessary materials clear of the work surface

Static Charge Considerations

Lyophilised peptide powders can carry electrostatic charge, causing material to adhere to vial walls or transfer equipment. Ground metal spatulas before use and work in a low-humidity environment where possible to minimise static effects.

Spill Management

For powder spills: dampen the area gently before collecting to prevent aerosolisation; collect with damp absorbent material; dispose as laboratory chemical waste
For solution spills: absorb with suitable material; dispose as laboratory chemical waste in accordance with local regulations
Document all spills in the laboratory incident log

Waste Disposal

Dispose of all peptide compound materials, solvents, and contaminated consumables as laboratory chemical waste. Do not dispose of via standard waste streams. Refer to the Disposal Guidelines document for full classification and disposal procedures.
